CC: Analysis Of Music Videos

Netsky-Puppy
  • Loose narrative based video, with disjuncture.
  • Fast cutting rate, with lots of mid-shots and close-ups.
  • Use of a Handi-cam.
  • Using Goodwin's theory, there is a relationship between the visuals and the music.
  • Using Barthes narrative codes, it is clear that there is an enigma as at the start of the video it leaves the audience wondering why they are on the top of a road with a skateboard.
  • The 'Hospital Records' logo at the start of the video shows the company's brand image before the audience get to see the actual video, therefore creating brand awareness.
  • I think that this video adds to the groups meta-narrative as it shows them being dare devils. The visuals of this music video are likely to attract the same audience as the track. This relates to Richard Dyer's theory about the common values of a music stardom being rebellion and youthfull.
  • In addition, it also conforms to Dyer's first paradox by being ordinary and extraordinary when the artists are going down the hill. This video also conforms to his second paradox by being present and absent for the consumer because the artist does not directly address the audience by looking into the camera.

Rihanna-Rude Boy

  • Performance and conceptual video because she is singing in it but is it very abstract.
  • Lots of meat shots.
  • Using Dyer's theory, the video shows Fetishism, commodification and reinforces the myth of feminintiy. This is shown by the provocative dancing and close-ups of parts of the artists body. In addition, it also shows rebellion, youthfullness, sexual magnification and creativity.
  • This video conforms to both of Dyer's paradox's as she is ordinary and extraordinary as well as present and absent because she does not break the fourth wall.
  • Using Goodwin's theory, there is a relationship between the lyrics and the visuals due to the sexual lyrics and sexual dancing. In addition, there is a relationship between the music and visuals because the beat of the song matches the cutting rate of the shots.
  • Jamaican style colouring to add to Rihanna's meta-narrative.
  • Fast cutting-rate.

  •  Narrative/conceptual/performance based.
  • Using Goodwin's theory there is a relationship between visuals and music, as well as a relationship between the visuals and the lyrics.
  • Fast cutting rate.
  • Lots of close-ups and mid-shots.
  • Using Dyer's theory, this video conforms by showing values of youthfulness, originality, creativity and disregard for social values.
  • In addition, it also conforms to Dyer's paradox's by being ordinary and extra ordinary for the consumer because the artist, Calvin Harris, looks like an average person in the video but the fact that he is in a remote location with people dancing on the side of the road, it makes the consumer think that he is extra ordinary. Harris is also present but absent for the consumer in this video because the consumer can see him but he does not look directly into the camera, therefore being absent.
