LB: Analysis Of Music Videos

Two Door Cinema Club - Changing of The Seasons

  • This video is a combination of both narrative and a performance video. We see the lead singer of the indie rock band lip syncing to the track in an ordinary interview as if he is speaking normally.
  • The whole video is in a black and white style which can easily be achived by using colour finesse/grading. This gives the video a whole new feel, and opportunitues for intresting shots of location and close ups of the band.
  • There is also a use of slow motion shots in this video which gives a sesne of disjunction despite the video being set in a normal modern day view.
  • The video has a cutting rate which matches the tempo of the track, using Goodwins theory there is a match between visuals and sound.
  • Later in the video the conventional perforcance video comes, which is typical for a band. There are close-ups of the instruments they are playing as well as close ups of the lead singer.
  • The video shows the band being involved in a situation where chaos is a big part, however they are shown carrying on playing music, telling there ausience in a narrative based way that music is all that matters too them.

Arctic Monkeys - R U Mine?

  • This video similar to the Two Door Cinema Club is both narrative and performance. It also has a dark colourwash over the top of the video.
  • In this video we are positioned behind a hand held camera which gives us the feeling that we are there beside the band.
  • The lead singer is only aware of the lyrics at certain points and does not lip sync throughout which makes us feel even more like the audience are in the car with him and singing along together.
  • There are no obvious cuts in the video, it is shown to be all one take clip at normal speed. No effects are used in the post production, just the band in a car.
  • However the hand held camera does show the close ups of the lead singer when singing which is a common trait when watching a performance video.
