LB: Sexualisation of Music Videos

"banal single interpretations of pieces of music, lazy comfort food for the eyes rather then stimulus to both the ears and the imagination"

Some music videos are argued against because of the over sexualisation of the video. Media theorist "Dyer" sees a semi-mythological set of meanings constructed around music performers in order to sell the performer to a large and loyal audience.

I looked at Nicki Minaj's - Super Bass. This video meets Dyers theory that the star is over sexualised and exaggerated for her audience.

·        Males/Females both shown sexually, not wearing much

·        Minaj = Meta – narrative, star not wearing much

·        Powerful, dominant female singer, control of the video

·        Meat shots, in majority of video.

·        She is a commodity, promoting video.

·        Stereotyping female, role model for children, kids aspiring to be like her

·         Camera techniques ; Shots of breasts, close ups on lips

·        Fast paced quick editing
